Author Guidelines

Modern Consumer Law in Perspective (MCLP) accepts submissions through a limited number of annual calls for papers rather than on a rolling basis. Current and forthcoming calls are announced on the journal's website. Submissions received outside an open call will not be considered.

Scope

MCLP publishes original scholarship on consumer protection law and policy, with particular attention to digitalisation, sustainable consumption and consumer vulnerability. While the journal centres on developments in European Union consumer law, it welcomes contributions examining consumer law theories or presenting empirical findings beyond the EU context. We particularly encourage work addressing overarching questions and systemic challenges rather than narrowly localised issues, and we expressly welcome interdisciplinary contributions from fields including law and economics, computer science, communication studies and economics.

Types of contributions

Research articles: [8,000–12,000] words, including footnotes. Original research employing legal, empirical, or critical theoretical methodologies.

Review essays, case notes, or commentary formats????

Originality

Submissions must be original, unpublished work not under consideration elsewhere. By submitting, authors confirm that the manuscript is their own work and that all sources are properly attributed. Any use of generative AI tools in preparing the manuscript must be disclosed in a note accompanying the submission. See also our AI Guidelines.

Language

Submissions are accepted in English. Manuscripts should be carefully edited before submission; both British and American spelling are accepted if applied consistently.

Preparation for anonymous review

MCLP operates a blind peer review process. Before submitting, remove all author-identifying information from the manuscript: names, affiliations, and acknowledgements; self-citations phrased in a way that reveals authorship (cite your own work in the third person); and identifying metadata in the file properties. Author details are entered separately in the submission system.

Formatting

  • Submit manuscripts as [.docx] files.
  • Include an abstract of no more than [250] words and [4–6] keywords.
  • Use footnotes rather than endnotes.
  • Referencing style: [OSCOLA / APA 7 / other — specify]. Interdisciplinary submissions using the citation conventions of the author's home discipline will be accommodated where possible; consistency is what matters.
  • Number all pages.

Empirical work

Submissions presenting empirical research should describe their methodology and data in sufficient detail to allow evaluation, and should indicate whether ethical approval was obtained where applicable. Authors are encouraged to make data and code available where possible, and host it independently in a manner that does not affect the double-blinded peer review.

Review process

All submissions passing an initial editorial screening undergo double-anonymised peer review. Reflecting the journal's slow science ethos, our review process is deliberately constructive: authors receive detailed feedback from a community of reviewers aiming to strengthen the academic quality of the work. Authors should expect a decision within 6 months of the close of the call.

Publication. MCLP is an open access journal (license CC BY 4.0). Accepted articles are published in issues appearing X times per year.

How to submit. Submissions are made through this website. Register for an account, then use the "Make a Submission" button and follow the five-step process during an open call. Questions may be directed to editors@modernconsumer.eu.
